The Dillinger Escape plan were greeted in Glasgow to the usual beautiful Scottish weather, yes, it was pouring with rain. But that didn’t stop them, and the support act The Ocean from putting on a hell of a show.

Interview: Jona Nido & Robin Staps Of The Ocean

German experimental metal band The Ocean have just released the fantastic Heliocentric. Guitarists Jona Nido and Robin Staps recently answered a few of our questions.

Heliocentric

German experimental metal band The Ocean return with the first of two albums in 2010, Heliocentric.

The album is a concept album about the rise of a heliocentric world view, which, according to Wikipedia is: “the idea that the earth revolves around the sun, and that the sun is stationary and at the centre of the universe.”

Heliocentric is a beautiful album. It ranges from peaceful and calm songs to heavy, sludgy songs. But every track is dark and moody, giving a very atmospheric feel. It’s the kind of album that has to be listened to from start to finish.

Opening track Shamayim blends straight into the next track Firmament, which is the perfect blend of heaviness and calmness. It sets the tone for the rest of the album perfectly.

The story of the album is based on religion, personally I don’t know much about this, but some people may be put off the album because of the lyrical content, but those people are missing out on a fantastic record.

Ptolemy Was Wrong is another great song, new vocalist Loic Rossetti really shines on this track. He has an amazing voice and he fits the music perfectly.

The album ends with a superb double hitter, The Origin Of The Species and The Origin Of God. The guitar riff will stay in your head for days. About two and a half minutes into The Origin Of The Species, the music calms down and drummer Luc Hess gets his chance to be in the spotlight. The sense of grandeur and epicness created by these tracks are unparalleled by most metal bands.

In all, Heliocentric is utterly brilliant. Roll on October for Anthropocentric
