Interview: Joey Vera of Armored Saint

We recetly had a chat with Joey Vera, bassist of Armored Saint and former bassist of Anthrax:

DistortedNews: You formed the band in 1982, did you think you would still be around over 25 years later?

Joey Vera: Definitely not. It’s amazing to us that we can still make music after all this time and somebody out there cares.

DN: Your new single Left Hook From Right Field is fantastic, is this what we can expect from the album?

JV: Well, the record has a few different things going on but yes, loud guitars and big drums.

DN: Where did the title of the album come from?

JV: La Raza is a term said by the Hispanic community and it goes “Viva La Raza!”. It means Long Live the Race. It’s a cry to pride for the heritage. We grew up in a mostly Latino part of the city on Los Angeles so this is something in our fabric. However, John wrote the lyrics for this tune in a more general sense, it applies to the human race as a whole.

DN: Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

JV: Biggest when I was young are Sabbath, Priest, Thin Lizzy, Queen, UFO, Scorpions, Zeppelin, Beatles. There’s more, but off the top of my head…

DN: If there was one band who you could erase from existence, who would it be?

JV: Jonas Brothers

DN: Have you got any plans to tour the UK after the release of the new album?

JV: Not at this time, but we hope to do some shows sometime in the future.

DN: Is there anything you can tell us about the John Bush’s situation with Anthrax? Will he be doing vocals on Worship Music?

JV: I can’t speak for John. His situation is still on the fence.

DN: If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be?

JV: That I was a decent person.

DN: You’ve toured with lots of huge names, who was the best band to tour with and who was the worst?

JV: I’ve had lots of good times with many different bands and not one was what I would consider to be the worst.

DN: What’s next for Armored Saint after the release of La Raza

JV: We are putting some plans together to maybe make a video for the record. But we’re in the middle of hashing out ideas, so hopefully soon. And possibly some shows are in our future.

La Raza will be released on the 16th of March 2010.
